Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

The Heart of Yoga Teachings

The Yoga Sutras is the foundation text of yoga. Arguably every yoga teachers needs an understanding of this philosophical framework.

This course aims to provide participants with a basic familiarity with the overall teachings of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and major themes and concepts of yoga, found in this highly significant text.

This 12 hour course, which is part of our respected Diploma of Yoga Teaching, will explore the relevance of these ancient concepts for the practice of yoga today and for health and wellbeing in our modern lives. In keeping with this oral tradition, the course includes the classical chanting of the Yoga Sutras.

This course is suitable for yoga teachers and yoga students keen to deepen their knowledge. No prior knowlege of the sutras is required.

The Fundamentals of Pranayama

Understanding & Teaching Yogic Breathing

Pranayama is the most powerful tool of yoga to bring about positive personal change.

This 18 hour course, from our Diploma of Yoga Teacher Training, is ideally suited to yoga teachers and experienced practitioners seeking to broaden their understanding of the intelligence and power of the breath.

The course will explore key principles of pranayama including understanding the vital energy of prana, how we can calm, energise and bring balance to our system through the breath. Partipants will also learn and practice teaching several pranayama breathing techniques.

Meditation II (including Mindfulness)

Developing Meditation Practices

Developing the capacity to bring a calm focus and process of transformation to the mind, is the essence of Yoga.

In this module you will:
• Learn basic techniques of meditation, including mindfulness
• Learn and practice advanced yoga meditation techniques, including use of;
- symbolic gestures (mudra & nyasa)
- power of intention (samkalpa) and visualisation (bhavana)
- mantra, sound and chanting
• Learn the principles of the vinyasa krama (appropriate steps) of designing and teaching meditation practices, with the most appropriate meditation technique (viniyoga) for different people
• Develop your capacity to match the mind to the most appropriate meditation technique (viniyoga)

This course is a module from the Advanced Diploma of Yoga Teacher Training. Pre-requisite: understanding of concepts of the model of meditation in yoga, and experience of basic meditation techniques (e.g. Yoga Institute-Meditation I). 12 hour course, 12 contact hours.

Yoga Psychology and Mental Health

A Framework for Mental Health

Yoga practice is underpinned by a time-tested philosophical and psychological framework. As contemporary yoga evolves, and its significance in the area of mental health, it is important to develop an understanding of this ancient system of wisdom.

In this Yoga Psychology module you will:

  • Explore themes of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, the foundational text of yoga.
  • Contextualise the key learnings from these ancient texts within yoga practice today.

This course is a module from the Advanced Diploma of Yoga Teacher Training. Pre-requisite: understanding of concepts of the model of meditation in yoga, and experience of basic meditation techniques (e.g. Yoga Institute-Meditation I). Prior study and familiarity of the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali (e.g. Yoga Institute - Yoga Sutra studies). 15 hour course, 15 contact hours.

Asana II

Classical Techniques of Advanced Yoga Postures

Explore the classical techniques and the appropriate application of “visesa” or special postures, in the tradition of Krishnamacharya.

This 12 hour course, from of our respected Diploma of Yoga Teaching, will include the correct instructions, modifications and counterposes for the visesa postures spanning inversions, backbends, sitting postures and arm balances. It will also explore practice planning and teaching practice of the more advanced postures.

This course is a great professional development opportunity for Yoga teachers and experienced Yoga practioners interested in refining their understanding of the visesa postures.

Designing Personal Practices

Yoga to Best Meet Your Clients Needs

Yoga has been taught on a one-to-one basis for most of it’s history. Group yoga classes have only been popular for about three decades. Great yogis, like Krishnamacharya, knew that the greatest benefits are experienced when a student does a regular yoga practice which is tailored to best meet their unique needs and goals.

Integrated Practice Design

with Advanced Techniques and Teaching Skills

A skillful yoga teacher utilises the many yoga tools available - asana, pranayama, meditation, bhavana, samkalpa, nyasa, etc to design yoga practices that best meet the unique needs of students. In this course you will consolidate your ability to design highly effective practices, combining various yoga techniques for specific groups and personal practices for individual needs.

The Yoga Narrative

Communications Skills for Yoga Teachers

The emphasis of most yoga teacher training is on what we teach - the right sequencing, accurate instructions and the theoretical frameworks of yoga.

In this fun and interactive workshop we investigate HOW we teach. We explore several highly effective communication techniques to gain and hold student’s attention and their loyalty including:

• Unpacking what makes a yoga teacher highly effective
• Practice teaching yoga with an understanding that people recieve information differently
• Learn how we can use lanuage more consciously to better engage our students

This one day course, from our respected Diploma of Yoga Teaching, is ideally suited to yoga teachers comfortable with the mechanics of teaching and keen to finese the subtlities of their delivery or "narrative".

The course facilitator is Sharon Longridge a Yoga Teacher and Educator at the Yoga Institute with a background in broadcasting, media training and communications.

Understanding the Bandhas

Unlocking the Potential of the Body Locks

From symbology and techniques to contraindications, this short course will deepen participants understanding of the appropriate application of the bandhas or "locks". Explore how can they enhance the transformative nature of a yoga practice.

This 6 hour course is part of our Diploma of Yoga Teacher Training. We also encourage attendees to come to the yoga classes beforehand to experience first hand the application of the bandhas with asanas and the bandhas with pranayama.
