Yoga for Back Care

The health of our back significantly impacts our wellbeing; if you are one of the millions complaining about “my aching back” you'll know this all to well.

Why is the back prone to injury?
As we age, ligaments and tendons shorten and joint range of motion decreases. Disks lose their ability to absorb shock, muscles weaken, and bones lose mass. This is compounded spending too much time sitting in cars, at desks, at computers. Bad posture makes matters worse.

How can yoga help reduce back pain?
Yoga helps build a strong yet supple spine as well as correcting postural misalignments. The subtle breath-work and relaxation practices of yoga can also provide pain sufferers with a powerful tool to manage their pain. Some of the back-conditions that may be eased by regular and appropriate yoga include: scoliosis, sciatica, lumbago, degenerated or bulging discs, as well as neck pain.

Our Yoga for Back Care Course
Often the best teachers of back care yoga are those who have experienced back problems themselves. Yoga Teacher and Ayurveda consultant Adrian Ward has a life long passion for yoga and the healing arts. Living with a degenerative spine condition has inspired Adrian’s special interest in how yoga can best be applied to support back care.

During 6 week course Adrian will guide students through a yoga program customised to address common back problems and enhance back strength and alignment. Students will also develop self awareness so they can practice yoga in a way that aids rather than aggitates their back, neck and spine.

BACK CARE YOGA TIP: If you are doing a yoga class or doing your own personal practice, here's a key principle to keep in mind...

Breathe as You Do the Yoga Poses. When we hold our breath, we hold onto tension. Quiet, slow breathing induces the relaxation response, allowing increased circulation to tissues whose vessels are constricted during times of stress. If you can stay in touch with your breath as you practice yoga you will also stay within a safe range of motion for your body and will be less likely to over-strain your muscles and ligaments.
